India has seen incredible growth in NEET Admissions and MBBS Seats in the past five years. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reports that MBBS admissions in India increased by 66%, from 80,312 seats in 2019-20 to 1,33,083 seats in 2023-24.
This expansion is meant to improve India's healthcare facilities and increase the supply of competent doctors in the country.
The rate of medical colleges and MBBS admissions in India has increased considerably over the different states. The most prominent states, such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana, contribute the largest number of NEET Admissions and MBBS Seats, with over 52,000 seats between them.
State/UT | Medical Colleges (2019-20) | edical Colleges (2023-24) | MBBS Seats (2019-20) | MBBS Seats (2023-24) |
Tamil Nadu | 49 | 74 | 7,150 | 11,650 |

The NEET UG admissions continue to be the only entrance test for all undergraduate medical courses in India. As per the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, all medical colleges and universities in the country follow NEET Admissions and MBBS rules for seat allocation.
Despite discussions on reforming the exam to ensure accessibility for economically weaker students, the government has made no changes to the NEET UG admissions process.
According to NEET 2024 statistics, the number of MBBS admissions in India has seen a consistent rise. The growth in medical colleges from 529 in 2019-20 to 706 in 2023-24 indicates the government's focus on healthcare growth.
India's doctor-population ratio has been enhanced to 1:811, taking into account both allopathic and AYUSH doctors. Although this is an improvement, the ratio still lags behind the WHO-recommended 1:1000 benchmark.
This underlines the need to enhance NEET Admissions and MBBS Seats to generate more doctors and enhance the nation's healthcare industry.
The government has taken various steps to make MBBS admissions in India more affordable. Fee regulation guidelines by the National Medical Commission (NMC) ensure that 50% of seats in private medical colleges and deemed universities are subject to fee control norms.
Government medical colleges still provide highly subsidized education, encouraging accessibility for deserving candidates.
With a 66% increase in NEET Admissions and MBBS Seats, the prospects for medical education in India are bright. The rising NEET UG admissions, along with initiatives to cap fees, will go a long way in bridging the shortage of doctors and enhancing the health system of the nation.
